Ellis Peters, One Corpse Too Many

Absolutely no memory of what happened. But know I was perfectly happy and absorbed for the entire two or three hours I spent reading it.

There was a mystery. It was solved. There's love and there's friendship and there's disguise and politics and there's purpose and resolution and dogged determination and a need for justice to be done to the dead and to be seen to be done as well.

I've got the entire Cadfael series in paperback. I think my favourites are among the last books The Summer of the Danes, where there's a fair bit about fathers and daughters, and Brother Cadfael's Penance, which is back to fathers and sons, but is worth it, if only for the last scene.

I think a conversation between Cadfael and Garak could be most interesting.

And probably a young couple in love that Cadfael sentimentally helps.

I'm slowly picking them up in paperback. When I've read one, I'm allowed to go and look for another, but I'm also trying to find them in order. That way I don't glut myself - there are always so many in all the secondhand shops and stalls, but not always the one I want.

Cadfael and Garak

Ooh yes!

Of course, there's a young couple, one of whom is dressed as a boy, which always makes things fun.

Nice way to get them - one-by-one.

Are there ever any boys dressed as girls, I wonder?

If I'm remembering correctly, this is my favourite so far (I've only read five or six) -- it's the one that introduces Beringar.

It's the second in the series, so it must be the one that introduces Beringar. I'm trying to pick them up in order so that I don't glut the bookcases any further.
